BUDGET GUIDELINES FOR VISITING THE GHETTO BIENNALE JACMEL

We strongly advise that you fly to Port-au-Prince and then take a charter plane to Jacmel which are approx. $100 each way. A gang controls the road south through Martissaint which makes the drive to Jacmel far too dangerous for visitors.

The price of the bus will be $15 each way if you have friends/collaborators coming from Port-au-Prince.

Haiti can be complicated and difficult to buy things as there are three currencies in play (gourdes, the virtual Haitian dollar and the American dollar) and these interchange without any perceivable logic. Often people will tell you just a number, it is always good idea to check what currency they mean. The notes have gourdes printed on them but often people divide by five and give you a price in Haitian dollars (which has it's roots in the American invasion of Haiti in 1915).

We have tried to make a list of the most obvious things and services you might need and given the average price in gourdes, Haitian dollars and US dollars. The exchange rate is approx. 137 gourdes for 1 US dollar but we’re basing everything on a rate of 140 gourdes to a dollars for simplicity! But keep in mind due to the instability the rate varies quite wildly.

Room prices are set this year at $50 a night per person regardless of room or whether you are sharing. All the room bookings will be organised by the Ghetto Biennale. The hotel is requesting that you pay your whole hotel bill in advance.

Welder | it’s complicated, we would suggest going to a welder shop instead of hiring a welder for a day. Give a welder a job to do would be less expensive than hiring one. Hiring a welder could range from $100 to $150 a day.
